After the crown numbers are increasing across the country, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) insists on uniform “clearer rules for all”. In an interview with BR editor-in-chief Christian Nitsche, he suggested not only strengthening protective measures at Corona’s hotspots, but everywhere. What helps municipalities with too high numbers to lower them again could help prevent them from increasing in the first place. “Possibly that also means applying the same concepts to those who have even lower values than we do now with those who have greater incidences.”
If there are high numbers everywhere, then they must be standardized, Söder emphasized. To do this, he will defend the deliberations of the prime ministers of the federal states with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on Wednesday, but also in Bavaria.
Söder: “Partial closures” everywhere
Söder cautioned against overlooking the situation. The figures are “too early too high”. In many regions of Germany, but also in some regions of Bavaria, there is exponential growth. That is why one has to resist carelessness and unreason very constantly. He wants to avoid a shutdown in any case, as the damage to schools and the economy would be very considerable. “If we do not act quickly and consistently, the worst threat,” warned the CSU politician.
The development in Europe is currently similar to that of spring. The numbers exploded in Germany, for example in France, Spain, Czech Republic and Great Britain, there are “partial closures” everywhere, said the Prime Minister. Germany is exactly on the threshold where the decision is made to risk a lockdown or remain cautious.
“Constantly apply” fines
In some cities there are “extreme developments”, Söder complained. “It’s almost out of control there.” And if tracing the chains of infection is no longer possible, “significantly tougher measures will soon have to be expected.” He reiterated that there were fewer problems at events, but more in private, for example at birthday and wedding celebrations.
The concept to prevent a confinement is very clear: more mask, less alcohol and clearly smaller events. “Ultimately, there is no other concept that can be done. Only by doing it now will we prevent ourselves from being harmed economically and academically.”
Söder also renewed his demand for uniform bus money nationwide for violations of the mask requirement. Anyone who is unreasonable should expect a corresponding penalty: in Bavaria it is 250 euros. The Prime Minister demanded that this be applied consistently. Because it is important to protect the sensible from the irrational.
Six municipalities in Bavaria break the upper limit
The list of cities and districts in Germany that have broken the upper limit of the crown is getting longer. Also in Bavaria, six municipalities have already exceeded the value of 50 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days (incidence of seven days). In a dozen other cities and towns, the incidence is above the warning value of 35.
Söder defended the number 50 as the upper limit. “If the numbers increase significantly, then the health authorities no longer have the opportunity to track him down.” Therefore, the Bavarian cabinet will significantly strengthen the health authorities again on Tuesday.
Söder rejected criticism of politicians’ decision to base their decision on protective measures on the number of infections. In his opinion, it would be dangerous, for example, to make the use of intensive care beds a benchmark: by the time hospital beds are full, “it is too late.”
Söder defends the accommodation ban
Despite criticism from business, politics and some doctors about the ban on guest accommodation from Corona hotspots, Söder sticks to the measure. If you have a negative corona test, you can go on vacation to Bavaria. That offers a bit of security, especially for the tourism and catering industry.
The more important question is: “Why do we have risk areas, how do we reduce the numbers?” Söder said. “It would be better if people didn’t drive everywhere again, didn’t drive everywhere and end up with infections or bring infections.”
