Mainz 05 introduced Christian Heidel as the new sports director. The ex-Mainz manager’s bet is not the only change the club has introduced: the Bundesliga’s penultimate fired manager Jan-Moritz Lichte and introduced a new interim manager with Jan Siewert. In addition, former Mainz manager Martin Schmidt will become the club’s new sporting director.

Last week, the Mainz team announced the separation of its sporting director and sporting director Rouven Schröder. In the course of the announcement, it had already been speculated that Heidel would return to the club.

The 57-year-old was already sporting director in Mainz between 1992 and 2016, had provided Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel with top coaching positions in professional football and led the club to the first division. Between 2016 and 2019 he was sporting director at Schalke 04, but was unable to take advantage of the successful time in Mainz.

Siewert was trained in England

Siewert was most recently junior coordinator at Mainz, having previously coached English club Huddersfield Town in the Premier League and Championship. Siewert is already Mainz’s third manager this season.

After a failed start to the season, the club parted ways with Achim Beierlorzer after matchday two. Under the light, the Mainz team only managed one win and three draws in eleven games. As penultimate, the club is four points behind relegation classification and five in first place without relegation.

New sports director Martin Schmidt can also look back on a past in Mainz. Between 2010 and 2017, the Swiss trained first the second, then the first team of the club. After his time in Mainz, he was active as a coach in Wolfsburg and Augsburg before assuming the first civil servant position.
