Referee Bibiana Steinhaus celebrates her Super Cup debut in the evening, and could possibly end her career afterward. As announced by the German Football Association (DFB) on Wednesday morning, the 41-year-old will be the first woman to whistle the German Super Cup between champion Bayern Munich and runner-up Borussia Dortmund (8:30 pm; ZDF and DAZN, live ticker: SPIEGEL.de).
The Bild-Zeitung later reported that it could be his last game as a professional referee. Consequently, it is “more than likely” that Steinhaus will end her career immediately after the final whistle. According to the report, private motives are decisive for the decision. The specialized magazine “Kicker” confirmed this report, the DFB did not want to comment on the request of the sports information service sid.
For Steinhaus, the game in Munich is the first game since matchday 32 of the preseason, in the first two matchdays of the professional leagues of the current season he was not yet in action as a referee.
Steinhaus was previously the first woman to be used as a referee in German professional football. The FIFA referee also made history with her first Bundesliga appearance in September 2017. Steinhaus was named “Referee of the Year” six times, and represented Germany three times each at the Women’s World Cup and the European Championship.
