Favre’s explosion in Dortmund!
After two and a half years, BVB pulled the rope and prematurely parted ways with their coach. The Pott Club made this public in a press release on Sunday. Then SPORT1-Information, however, the decision was made much earlier. (The Bundesliga table)
SPORT1 explains the antecedents of the separation of Lucien Favre.
At 3:08 pm, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke drove to the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel on Sunday. Sporting Director Michael Zorc and Director of Licensed Players Sebastian Kehl arrived seven minutes early.
Watzke spoke with the assembled team for about ten minutes and informed the team of the boss’s decision. He also thanked Favre for his work.
“We are all grateful to Lucien Favre for his excellent work in the last two and a half years, in which he and his team have won two runner-up championships,” Watzke is quoted in the BVB press release. “As an expert and as a person, Lucien Favre is beyond question.”
Zorc explains BVB’s separation from Favre
At 3:34 p.m. Watzke left in his silver Mercedes limousine.
“It’s difficult for us to take this step,” says sporting director Michael Zorc. “However, we believe that achieving our seasonal targets is at great risk due to recent negative developments in the current situation and that we must therefore act.”
Another part of the truth is that bosses have rarely been so convinced of a coach’s firing in the past. The decision to part ways with Favre prematurely was left behind SPORT1-Information already on Saturday night after the applause 1: 5 against VfB Stuttgart. Up to two and a half hours after the final whistle, the club’s superiors sat in a box and made the decision. Watzke didn’t go home until 7:54 pm and spoke of a “black day.”
The Dortmund Favres consultant contacted Reza Fazeli that evening. The agent drove to his client’s home and was in charge of phone calls with the BVB bosses.
“I think it’s a shame that we part here,” Favre himself said Sunday. German press agency: “We have had two very successful years and we have a team that would also have had a successful season this year. I am still convinced of that.”
Marco Reus’s statements say it all
But: The Favre-Aus had emerged. The team no longer trusted their coach. The fact that there was no longer any basis for successful cooperation is also reflected in the latest results with three home games without a win. (Results and calendar of the Bundesliga)
After the applause against Stuttgart, captain Marco Reus said regretfully: “We are not a team that knows how to defend well. You have to be very clear.”
The club bosses had many conversations with the team in recent weeks. This solidified the impression that Favre could no longer reach the team.
Favre also ran into Moukoko
Team’s main claim: Especially against nominally weaker teams, the Swiss should not have given him a proper match plan. Furthermore, some of Favre’s top players lacked the necessary courage. BVB acted too much wait and see on the field. Many players on the team also did not like the fact that the friendly and aloof tactician always spoke forcefully to opposing teams rather than pointing out the qualities of his own team.
There was a lack of understanding of Favre’s actions in the management of the club, especially regarding the personality of Youssoufa Moukoko. The fact that Favre didn’t bring in the mega talent despite Erling Haaland’s injury-related loss in past games made his head shake. The management team is convinced of the qualities of the wonderful 16-year-old forward and they trust him to help the professional team immediately.

Favre and BVB: The already difficult relationship has been history since Sunday. The 63-year-old coach could not personally say goodbye to the team. Co-coach Manfred Stefes, with whom Favre had previously worked in Mönchengladbach, was also fired.
Terzic takes over: BVB wants a great training solution
At Edin Terzic, BVB now relies on an internal solution. The 38-year-old former assistant coach will be promoted initially and must lead the team until the end of the season. The Sauerland native will appear at a press conference on Monday at 1:15 pm BVB executives are convinced that the young coach can especially grab the team emotionally. That was completely lacking under Favre.
Then SPORT1-Information, Terzic should only work as head coach until June 30 and then return to the second level. BVB bosses are striving to find a great solution with all their might.
Preferred candidate: Marco Rose, who still has a contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach until 2022, in the summer SPORT1-The information has an exit clause – and Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig, contract until 2023).
