After a fire on Christmas Eve, electricity and water were temporarily cut off in a high-rise building in Neu-Hohenschönhausen. Initially, dozens of residents were transferred to a hotel.

The residents of a skyscraper in the district of Neu-Hohenschönhausen did not have a pleasant Christmas Eve. After a basement fire, the home was temporarily disconnected from electricity and water networks, a fire department spokesman said. Due to the large number of victims, two stairways were cleared overnight, the Lichtenberg district office said.

Consequently, some of the tenants remain private. 43 residents were temporarily accommodated in a hotel in Lichtenberg. The crisis team from the district office was still in place on Christmas Day.

The Berlin fire brigade had moved to Ahrenshooper Strasse on Christmas Eve with 105 emergency services after two sheds and a power distribution box were lit for an inexplicable cause. Due to the dense development of smoke, eight flights of stairs were completely covered in smoke.

Two residents in the hospital

Seven residents had to be brought to safety by firefighters. Two of them were taken to a hospital for medical attention, but were quickly able to get out again, as explained by the Lichtenberg district office.

The Lichtenberg district mayor thanked the rescuers for their commitment. “I would like to thank the more than 100 emergency services who provided support at the scene yesterday. I am glad that no one was injured,” said Michael Grunst (left). “Everyone involved worked hard yesterday to help those affected on Christmas Eve.”
