The seven-day incidence drops somewhat
RKI reports the highest number of deaths

The Robert Koch Institute recorded 962 deaths related to the coronavirus, more than ever since the start of the pandemic. Although the seven-day incidence has decreased minimally, this does not mean that the situation has improved.

The number of reported deaths related to the coronavirus has reached a new record. In one day, German health authorities transmitted 962 new deaths to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), according to RKI figures from Wednesday morning. In addition, 24,740 new infections were reported. Last Wednesday (December 16), there were 27,728 new infections and the previous high of 952 deaths, but the numbers tilted significantly up. Problems in the transmission of data to the RKI emerged on Tuesday last week, which meant that numerous case reports from Saxony could only be factored into Wednesday’s figures. The highest value with 33,777 reported infections was there on Friday, but it also included 3,500 late reports.

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) reported to health authorities in seven days fell slightly to 195.1 on Wednesday. The day before, a high of 197.6 had been reached. Saxony achieved by far the highest value: there the seven-day incidence is 414.1, more than double the national average. Thuringia follows with a value of 319.6. The lowest value is recorded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 96.3.

Recently, the number of deaths tended to increase, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 27,968 as of Wednesday. The RKI has counted 1,554,920 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 23, 12 am).

Around 1,160,100 people are estimated to have recovered. According to RKI’s situation report on Tuesday night, the seven-day national R-value was 0.95 (previous day: 0.98). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 95 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Note: RKI figures generally deviate slightly from the case data that ntv.de daily reports at night. The data team of ntv.de has direct access to the registration figures of the federal states, published by the ministries and local authorities. The RKI, on the other hand, is linked to legally prescribed reporting channels, which can lead to a delay.

In addition, the respective daily values map different recording periods: the ntv assessment collects the country information published at night and uses it to calculate a daily status of the number of reported cases, which is generally published as of 8 pm The RKI’s recording system, on the other hand, takes into account incoming reports up to midnight, and the current status of the data is announced the next morning.
