reThe number of new corona virus infections remains at a high level, even as German health authorities reported comparatively few new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) at the beginning of the week. 16,643 new cases were transmitted in one day, as announced by the RKI on Monday morning. Last Monday, the number of new infections reported was slightly less at 16,362. However, the numbers tend to be lower at the beginning of the week, in part because there is less testing on the weekend. The highest value with 33,777 reported infections was recorded on Friday; however, this included around 3,500 cases reported the day before.
German health authorities also reported 226 new deaths in 24 hours. Exactly a week ago this value was 188. On Wednesday the previous high of 952 deaths was reached. The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently increased, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died from a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection or, among other things, increased to 26,275.
The RKI has counted 1,510,652 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 21, 00:00). Around 1,115,400 people are estimated to have recovered. The number of new infections reported to health authorities within seven days per 100,000 population (7-day incidence) was given by the RKI on Monday as 197.1. This is the highest level since the pandemic began.
According to RKI’s situation report on Sunday night, the national seven-day R value was 1.04 (previous day: 1.06). This means that 100 infected people infect 104 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection rate decreases.
