Italy reports significantly more Covid-19 related deaths. And that’s before the seven-week curfew was lifted on Monday. But the situation is not as bad as the numbers at first glance suggest.
Just two days before the gradual relaxation of the crown curfew began, the number of new deaths skyrocketed. Authorities said on Saturday that 474 people had died as a result of their viral infection in 24 hours, the highest number since April 21. The total number of deaths increased to 28,710, the second highest number after the United States.
However, the numbers could be misleading: According to information in the Italian media, the drastic increase is due to the fact that previously unregistered victims who died outside of hospitals in April were counted, as only the Saturday. In fact, the number of new deaths was 192. The previous day, 285 had been reported.
In general, the situation in Italy seems to be slowly under control. The number of people who have recovered is increasing every day, while the number of infected people who have to go to the hospital or even to the intensive care unit is decreasing. At 100,704, the death toll is as low as the last on April 11.
The loosening will take effect on Monday
Starting Monday, the restrictions that have been in place in Italy for two months will gradually relax. Walks, outdoor sports, and family visits are allowed again, parks can be accessed again, restaurants are allowed to open for takeout, as well as other stores.
The two airports Ciampino in Rome and Peretola in Florence, which have been closed since mid-March, will also reopen on Monday and long-distance trains will travel to long-distance destinations again. According to Italian press reports, the nurseries could reopen in June, subject to expenses.
According to the “Corriere della Sera”, the Ministry of Education plans to return small groups of between three and six children up to six years old to the facilities. However, its temperature must be measured at the entrance and masked masters are required. Schools in the country remain closed until September.
Italy’s emergency protection officer Domenico Arcuri urged the population on Saturday not to neglect in view of the relaxation. Phase II of the crisis would only make the challenges even greater. If it triggers a new wave of infection, “relative freedom” should be withdrawn immediately.
