meA demonstration against the car as the dominant mode of transport not only resulted in traffic jams for kilometers on the A3 motorway on Tuesday, but also in a serious traffic accident. In the morning, environmental activists cordoned off a motorway bridge between the Idstein and Bad Camberg junctions and displayed signs reading “Tram, zero fare, bike paths instead of cars.”

Police blocked the highway in both directions and alerted special forces. After their arrival, one of the protesters voluntarily returned to the bridge. The second was removed from its booth with the use of SEK forces and firefighters. More protesters had gathered on the bridge and had to be taken away by emergency services. At the end of the traffic jam, a car driver was unable to stop in time and collided with a truck.

The driver was seriously injured and got out of the vehicle and was taken to a hospital in a rescue helicopter. Rescue workers also had to fight their way through traffic as no rescue alley had formed. Even the police force was initially stuck in traffic. The full shutdown was lifted for the first time around noon. The length of the traffic jam temporarily increased to 14 kilometers.

The protest is related to the resistance against logging in the Herrenwald and Dannenröder forest. 49 trees must be cut down or have already been cut down for the construction of the highway. Cleaning work has been carried out at various points along the planned route since October 1, accompanied by protests.
