In the debate on how to contain the coronavirus, pediatricians have spoken out against extending the Christmas holidays. Closed schools, kindergartens and kindergartens should be seen “only as the latest measure in the context of a general lockdown,” the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine and the German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases announced Wednesday.
One is “decidedly against an extension of the Christmas holidays until January,” it says in the statement. It is supported by the professional association of pediatricians. The data from Germany give no reason to consider school closures as an “appropriate and appropriate means” to combat pandemics.
According to doctors, the debate does not take into account the negative consequences of school closings, even in the short term, on the well-being and future prospects of children.
The Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences, but also the EU Commission, had advised to consider extending school holidays or online lessons after holidays to limit the risk of infection. Unlike the previous spring, politicians in Germany had recently set a goal of keeping kindergartens and schools open.
The reactions of some school ministers to Leopoldina’s proposals were equally acute. NRW School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) dismissed the idea of an anticipated Christmas break from December 14 as “inappropriate.” The proposed temporary suspension of compulsory schooling will not exist with her, Gebauer said in state parliament. It was completely incomprehensible to him how an academy of science could represent such a statement.
Susanne Eisenmann, the CDU’s education minister in Baden-Württemberg, also rejected the ideas of the academy of sciences. “We still want to avoid this drastic step of school closings across the country because we have learned from the spring time,” he said.
He also assured that the scientists were somewhat unrealistic: “Some claims show that the Leopoldina does not appear to be completely up to date with the Crown measurements.”
