Dessau / Salzwedel –

As soon as they return to the classroom, dozens of students and teachers in Saxony-Anhalt have to stay home: on the third day of the new school year, three schools in the state were quarantined, some of them entire years, due to isolated cases crown.

According to the state Ministry of Education, at one High school in Dessau as well as two more Schools in Salzwedel (Altmarkkreis) a student tested positive for the corona virus. The result: peers and teachers who have had contact with the infected have to stay home until a negative test is obtained.

Two years in Salzwedel in Corona quarantine

At the Salzwedeler Jahn-Gymnasium, two full years with a total of six classes and their teachers are temporarily excluded from the school building. The Lessing school in Salzwedel will remain completely closed until Tuesday.

At the Dessau Philanthropinum Gymnasium, however, the quarantine only affects 27 students. The fact that the students behave relatively lightly here is due to the forward-looking action of the school leadership. According to her own statements, Principal Astrid Bach learned of three suspicious cases among her students on Thursday evening, not from the Dessau-Roßlau health department, but from a teacher. According to Bach, they are all ninth-grade students who had contact with an infected child in Hungary.

Dessau principal decides on her own and leaves students at home

On her own initiative, the principal immediately decided to leave the class at home on Friday. When the health department finally contacted her on Saturday with a positive result and ordered a quarantine, it was worth it. Because: On Thursday, first day of school, classes were called to school individually. “Otherwise the whole class probably would have had to stay home now,” says the principal. As in Salzwedel.

However, the Ministry of Education does not see any misconduct on the part of the schools there: the number of people that should be quarantined in a suspected case depends on the number of contacts. And that’s different depending on the staff and conditions on the schoolyard and in the classroom, says Ministry spokesman Stefan Thurmann.

The country reacts calmly to the start of school

In Magdeburg, however, people are quite relaxed about the beginning of school. Thurmann said infections were to be expected. However, the actions of the offices and the school administration prevented the three houses from having to be completely closed again. “The measures have worked so far,” Thurmann said.

While face-to-face enrollment continues for most students at the Dessau Philanthropinum, according to the ministry, there is now limited regular operation at the Salzwedeler Gymnasium. That means: classroom lessons only for hours and in small groups. The rest occurs in homeschooling. Thurmann stated that this is not a great disadvantage. Meanwhile, teachers and students are better coordinated than at the beginning of the pandemic. “Here we are no longer at zero” (Mz).
