The fatal attack on teacher Samuel Paty shocked the French. He was considered a role model pedagogue and was honored with a national memorial service on Thursday. However, a 19-year-old student commented on the Internet about the murder of the teacher for Islamist reasons with positive words and has now been sentenced to a suspended sentence of four months.
The sentence was imposed in Friday’s expedited trial for “defense of terrorism.” The biology student must also complete a six-month internship in which she is taught the basic values of the French state.
A week ago, Paty was beheaded in a Paris suburb by an 18-year-old murderer of Chechen origin for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in class. The 19-year-old student wrote on the online Facebook network that the history teacher did not deserve to be beheaded, “but to die, yes.” She was arrested at the University of Besançon on the advice of another Internet user.
In court, the young woman was remorseful: “I’m sorry I wrote this comment, I apologize.” You wrote the words “too fast” and “without thinking.” She also noted that she later deleted her message herself.
Macron on Paty: “A silent hero”
Paty was honored as a “silent hero” by President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday at a national memorial service. The teacher was murdered by “cowards” “because he embodied the republic,” Macron said.
Paty had shown the Mohammed cartoons to her students when it came to the subject of free speech. The images had been published by the satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo”, whose office in Paris carried out an attack with twelve deaths in 2015 due to the cartoons.
Since the attack on the teacher, French security authorities have carried out dozens of operations against individuals and associations allegedly belonging to or closely related to the Islamist spectrum. The Judiciary began investigations for complicity in the murder of half a dozen suspects, including two students and the father of a student. The author himself was shot dead by the police shortly after the attack in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.
