Ruth Bader Ginsburg: body lying on Capitol Hill

Few deceased are honored to keep their coffin in the United States Capitol, especially when it comes to women. In 2005, black civil rights activist Rosa Parks was the first American woman to receive this honor.

Now leading Democratic and Republican politicians have said goodbye to Ruth Bader Ginsburg in this way. The Supreme Court judge died last Friday at the age of 87. She is the first woman and person of Jewish faith to receive the honor of Lie in the State. The honor has been bestowed on fewer than three dozen people, mostly presidents, vice presidents and members of Congress. Parks had been honored as a private woman, so the honor was called “Lie in Honor”.

“May he rest in peace,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Ginsburg, a Democrat. Pelosi praised Ginsburg as “one of the greatest American women.”

Members of the Senate and House of Representatives attended the event to fire the lawyer. However, some prominent Republicans such as Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, were missing. Democratic presidential candidate and former Senator Joe Biden was there, as was Kamala Harris, Democratic vice presidential candidate.

Former Ginsburg fitness coach Bryant Johnson stood out from the crowd. He knelt in front of the coffin and did three push-ups. The video quickly made its way across social media. Ginsburg was known for playing iron sports even in old age. In 2016 the judge, then 83, said she always did ten push-ups in her training, “then I breathe, then I do ten more.”

On Wednesday and Thursday, many people had thought of the people’s judge in the coffin placed in the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of the United States. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, was also there, but was booed during his visit.

A bitter dispute has erupted between Democrats and Republicans over the replacement of the vacant seat in the influential court (read more here). As president, Trump has the right to propose and wants to fill the position as quickly as possible.

The Democrats absolutely want to avoid this. They demand that the winner of the November 3 presidential election nominate Ginsburg’s successor, hoping that Biden will win against Trump.
