Shortly before 6 p.m. local time, Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the 13th time with a three-set victory over Novak Djokovic.
Less than half an hour later, he received the congratulations that should mean the most to him: Roger Federer, whose record of 20 Grand Slam titles he has now equaled, not only congratulated the Spaniard, he also paid tribute to him.
“I have always had the utmost respect for my friend Rafa as a person and as a champion. As the biggest rivals, he and I have pushed each other over and over again over the years and we have become better,” the Swiss wrote on Twitter He added: “That is why it is a great honor for me to congratulate him on his 20th Grand Slam title.”
