According to the RKI, 2,194 people were infected with the coronavirus in one day, the highest value since April. Virologist Drosten said in view of the current situation: “Now we are on the rise again.”
The number of new coronavirus infections has once again passed the 2000 threshold and reached the highest level since April. In one day, German health authorities reported 2,194 new corona infections, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported.
Peak in late March, early April
The peak of new infections reported daily was in late March / early April at over 6000. Then the number tended to decline and rose again in July. In August, the number of cases was just over 2000 (2034). The number of new infections detected is also likely to depend on how many people are tested.
Drosten: “We are on the rise again”
Virologist Christian Drosten sees differences in the development of the number of new infections in Germany compared to August. The value of around 2,200 new infections “is not a random fluctuation. Now we are increasing again,” said the Charité scientist in Berlin at the communications congress of the Federal Association of Communicators.
In August, the brief rise and fall in the number of new infections was almost certainly due to imported cases from abroad, “which did not go further in Germany,” Drosten said. The now newly diagnosed cases are infections that have occurred in Germany and mainly indications of undetected clusters in the background, which are then in Germany.
For example, a group can be a group of people at a family celebration. In the case of returning travelers, this cluster is located abroad. The current cases are different: and there is an undetected group in the background.
Situation not comparable to March
Drosten emphasized that the situation was not comparable to that of March. Even if more than 6,000 new diagnoses were reported soon per day, as was the case in late March / early April, it would not be the same because many more were being tested. You don’t have to do a “lockdown” like in March.
According to the RKI, at least 265,857 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (data as of September 17, 12:00 am). According to the RKI, the number of deaths related to a corona infection is 9,371. Three more deaths have been reported since the previous day.
R value at 1.00
By morning, some 237,300 people had survived the infection according to RKI estimates. According to RKI estimates in Germany, based on Wednesday night’s management report, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.00 (previous day: 1.04). This means that an infected person infects another person on average. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.
Additionally, the RKI gives a seven-day R call in its current status report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.06 (previous day: 1.00). It shows the infection process for eight to 16 days.
