3.1 million people from Rhineland-Palatinate in 52 electoral districts were summoned to elect their representatives to the new parliament in the 2021 state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate.
With no significant losses compared to 2016, the SPD around Prime Minister Malu Dreyer won with 35.7 percent of the vote. Based on the preliminary official final result, the CDU around leading candidate Christian Baldauf ranked second in polls on Sunday with an all-time low of 27.2 percent. Five years ago, the SPD won 36.2 percent of the vote, while the CDU had already reached a low of 31.8 percent.
According to the preliminary result, the Greens got 9.3 percent of the vote on Sunday after 5.3 percent in 2016. The AfD fell from 12.6 percent to 8.3 percent, as did the FDP from 6.2 percent to 5.5 percent. For the first time in Mainz’s state parliament on Sunday, free voters were able to win with 5.4 percent of the vote, while the left again missed the five percent hurdle.
The SPD has 39 seats in the new state parliament and the CDU 31 seats. The Greens have ten seats, the AfD nine and the FDP and Free Voters each have six seats. The traffic lights coalition that Dreyer previously ruled with the Greens and the FDP could continue its work with 54 of the 101 seats.
The 64.4 percent turnout was lower than in the 2016 elections at 70.4 percent. The share of voters by mail was around 66 percent and was more than double that in the 2016 election, when just under 31 percent voted this way, as explained by the election administration.
