reGerman health authorities reported 7,595 new corona infections within 24 hours on Wednesday morning, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). This is the second highest value awarded by the RKI since the beginning of the pandemic. It remains just below Saturday’s high of 7830, but is well above the 5132 new infections reported last Wednesday.

On Saturday, the number of new infections hit a record for the third time in a row since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany. However, the current values are only partially comparable with those of the spring, because now many more tests are being carried out and therefore more infections are discovered.

According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. That is why it will take some time before policy measures can be reflected in the registration figures.

Urgent appeal

“Currently, an accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can be observed in Germany,” the RKI writes in its management report on Tuesday. “Therefore, an urgent call is made for the entire population to be committed to protecting against infections.” The RKI includes, among other things, rules of distance and outdoor hygiene, indoor ventilation and, if necessary, covering the mouth and nose. The seven-day incidence, the number of new corona infections per 100,000 residents in seven days, has risen to 48.6 on a national average.

According to the RKI, at least 380,762 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the start of the pandemic. Therefore, the number of deaths related to an infection was 9875. That was 39 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 302,100 have been recovered.
