The number of new corona cases in one day has risen sharply again, and is just below last Saturday’s record high. The RKI warns the population to protect themselves and others.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, German health authorities reported 7,595 new corona infections in 24 hours on Wednesday morning. The value remains just below Saturday’s high of 7,830, but is well above the 5,132 new infections reported last Wednesday.

On Saturday, the number of new infections hit a record for the third time in a row since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany. However, the current values are only partially comparable with those of the spring, because now many more tests are being carried out and therefore more infections are discovered.

According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. That is why it will take some time before policy measures can be reflected in the registration figures.

Hover over a county to see how many new infections there were in the past seven days per 100,000 residents. The data comes from Robert Koch Institute and are updated daily. Note: districts and cities in the district with the same name are displayed separately. For example, to see the value of the city of Rosenheim in the Rosenheim district, you may need to zoom in on the map.

RKI calls on the population to protect themselves and others

“Currently, an accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can be observed in Germany,” the RKI wrote in its management report on Tuesday. “Therefore, an urgent call is made for the entire population to commit to protection against infections.” The RKI also includes rules for distance and outdoor hygiene, ventilation of indoor spaces and, if necessary, covering the mouth and nose. The seven-day incidence, the number of new corona infections per 100,000 residents in seven days, has risen to 48.6 on a national average.

According to the RKI, at least 380,762 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (until October 21 at 12:00 am). The number of deaths related to a corona infection was, therefore, 9,875. That was 39 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 302,100 have been recovered.

The value of R again decreased slightly

The number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.25 in Germany according to the RKI situation report on Tuesday (previous day: 1.35). This means that ten infected people infect an average of 12 to 13 more people. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

In addition, the RKI gives the so-called R of seven days in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value is now 1.23 (previous day: 1.25). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
