Not a record, but extremely high values for a Sunday – the Robert Koch Institute has released its Corona figures again. The R value is of particular concern.

As expected, German health authorities reported comparatively few new corona infections in 24 hours. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value early Sunday morning at 5,587. The number of registered cases is usually lower on Sundays and Mondays, also because not all health authorities transmit data to the RKI on weekends. Compared to 3,483 infections on Sunday last week, the current value is significantly higher.

The number of new infections reached 7,830 for the third time in a row on Saturday. In its Saturday night situation report, the RKI notes that more than half of all districts now have a higher spread of the coronavirus of more than 25 infections detected per week and 100,000 residents.

According to the RKI, at least 361,974 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (as of October 18 at 12:00 am). Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9,777. That was ten more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 291,900 have been recovered.

Playback number now at 1.37

According to RKI’s situation report on Saturday, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.40 in Germany (previous day: 1.22). This means that an infected person infects about 1.4 people on average. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

Additionally, the RKI gives a seven-day R call in its current status report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.37 (previous day: 1.30). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
