reThe number of new coronavirus infections remains high. German health authorities have sent 32,195 new cases and 802 deaths in one day to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the RKI announced on Thursday. Last Thursday (December 17), health authorities reported 26,923 new corona cases and 698 deaths to the RKI. However, for technical reasons, around 3,500 Baden-Württemberg infections are missing from this value. Also due to the late reports that resulted from this, the peak of 33,777 new infections was recorded on Friday. The peak of 962 deaths was reached on Wednesday.

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) reported to health authorities in seven days was 196.2 on Thursday. A high of 197.6 was reached on Tuesday. Saxony reached by far the highest value: there the seven-day incidence is 425.7, more than double the national average. Thuringia follows with a value of 327.9. The lowest value is registered in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 95.6.

The RKI has counted 1,587,115 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (to December 24, 00:00). The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 28,770 as of Thursday. Around 1,184,400 are estimated to have recovered.

With the R value, the RKI saw in its management report on Wednesday night a “recent slightly downward trend”. The seven-day R-value at the national level was 0.92 (previous day: 0.95). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 92 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
