reThe number of new corona virus infections remains high, even as German health authorities reported comparatively few new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) earlier in the week. 16,362 new cases were transmitted in one day, as announced by the RKI on Monday morning. That’s about 4,000 more cases than last Monday, when the number of new infections reported was 12,332. The previous high was reached on Friday with 29,875 reported cases. On Sundays and Mondays, the number of cases published by the RKI is usually lower, not least because fewer tests are performed on weekends.

German health authorities also reported 188 new deaths in 24 hours. Exactly a week ago this value was 147. On Friday the previous high of 598 deaths was reached. The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently increased, which was also expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 21,975.

The seven-day incidence, which is crucial to assess the situation, new infections reported per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, is also increasing significantly in Germany. On Sunday it was at a high of 169. On Monday it rose even higher to 176.4.

The RKI has counted 1,337,078 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 14, 00:00). An estimated 984,200 people have recovered.

According to RKI’s situation report on Sunday, the national seven-day R-value was 1.12 (previous day: 1.17). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 112 more people. After fluctuating around 1 for weeks, it has been above 1.1 since Friday. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. Only when it is below 1 for a longer period does it decrease.
