The corona virus does not know Christmas, so the number of infections in Germany also increases during the holidays. The Robert Koch Institute released current figures on Saturday.
German health authorities reported a total of 14,455 new corona infections in 24 hours. Additionally, a further 240 deaths were recorded, as reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
However, these figures are only partially comparable with the values of the previous week. The RKI expected fewer tests and fewer reports from health authorities during the holidays.
Last Saturday, 31,300 new infections were transmitted in one day. The previous high was reached on Friday a week ago with 33,777 infections, but that included 3,500 late reports. The highest death toll of 952 was reached last Wednesday (December 16).
The number of new infections per 100,000 population (seven-day incidence) reported to health authorities in seven days was 170.7 on Saturday. A high of 197.6 was reached on Tuesday.
1,627,103 infections detected
The RKI has counted 1,627,103 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 29,422 as of Saturday.
According to the RKI report on Thursday, the national seven-day R-value was 0.97 (previous day: 0.92); there is no more recent value because the RKI did not release a corresponding situation report on Friday night due to the holidays. This R value means that 100 infected people infect another 97 people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
