For the first time since April, the Robert Koch Institute has reported more than 5,000 new corona infections in one day. The proportion of cases in older people is also increasing, although only slightly.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities have reported more than 5,000 new corona infections in one day for the first time since April. According to the RKI, the total was 5132. That is more than 1000 cases more than the day before.

The latest peak since April was 4,721 new cases detected last Saturday. A week ago, the health authorities had notified the RKI of 2,828 new infections. More recently, in mid-April, the numbers were as high as now.

RKI: “Accelerated Increase in Transmissions”

However, the values with the spring are only partially comparable to each other, because now many more tests are done and therefore more infections are discovered. The RKI writes about the current situation: “At this time, an accelerated increase in transmissions can be observed in the population in Germany. Therefore, it is urgently requested that the entire population commit to protection against infections.”

Therefore, the proportion of Covid-19 cases is increasing slightly in the older population. In general, older people are considered to be more susceptible to severe corona disease than younger people.

9,000 free intensive care beds

The number of patients with crown in the intensive care unit has increased markedly in recent days, but remains comparatively low. According to data from the DIVI intensive care registry, around 620 Covid patients are being treated in intensive care, a week earlier it was around 450. In total, however, almost 9,000 intensive care beds are still free in Germany.

According to the RKI, at least 334,585 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis. The number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9677. This is 43 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 281,900 have been recovered.

R-value drops slightly

According to RKI estimates, the number of views, or the R-value for short, is 1.18 (previous day: 1.29). This means that one infected person infects slightly more than one other person on average. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

Furthermore, the RKI gives a so-called R. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value is 1.20 (previous day: 1.25). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
