The number of new infections and deaths has decreased since last week. The seven-day incidence is the national average of 111.1, but in one district it still exceeds 400.

German health authorities reported 12,257 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in one day. In addition, 349 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours, the RKI announced.

On Sundays and Mondays, the number of infections and deaths reported is usually lower than the rest of the days of the week because fewer tests are carried out on weekends and some health authorities do not transmit data to the RKI.

Last Sunday, the RKI recorded 13,882 new infections and 445 new deaths in 24 hours. On January 14, the maximum of 1,244 new deaths was reached. Among new infections recorded within 24 hours, the highest value was reported on December 18, at 33,777, but this included 3,500 late reports.

Incidence from 7 days to 111.1

The number of new infections reported in seven days per 100,000 population (incidence of seven days) was, according to the RKI, on Sunday morning the national average was 111.1. The incidence varies greatly from region to region: it ranges from 426.6 in the most severely affected Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt to only 24.3 in the Friesland district in Lower Saxony.

The previous seven-day national incidence peak was reached on December 22 at 197.6. The number fluctuated after that and has been falling again for several days. The federal government’s goal is to reduce the incidence below 50.

More than 51,000 dead since the pandemic began

The RKI has counted 2,134,936 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until January 24, 00:00). The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 51,870. The RKI stated that the number of people recovered was around 1,807,500. However, this is only an estimate.

According to RKI’s situation report on Saturday night, the national seven-day R-value was 1.01 (previous day: 0.97). This means that 100 infected people infect 101 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
