President Macron reacts harshly to Erdogan’s verbal attack. France immediately called its ambassador from Ankara. The Turkish head of state had previously advised Macron to have a “mental health check.”
France withdraws its ambassador from Turkey. President Emmanuel Macron justified the measure with statements from his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They are unacceptable, said a representative of the French presidency of the AFP news agency.
Excess and rudeness are not a method. Erdogan has to change his political course “because he is dangerous in every way.” The French ambassador in Ankara had been called to Paris to consult with Macron.
Dozens of operatives against Islamists
Erdogan had previously attacked Macron for his statements on Islam. Macron needs treatment at the mental level, Erdogan criticized in a television speech. “What is the problem that this person by the name of Macron has with Muslims and Islam?” Erdogan said.
In early October, Macron had declared that he would fight “Islamist separatism” that threatened to take control of some Muslim communities in France. A few days later, France was rocked by the murder of Samuel Paty by a radical Islamist.
The attacker of Chechen origin was shot dead by police shortly after the crime. History teacher Paty had covered the topic of free speech in class, using controversial cartoons of Muhammad. After the attack, the French police carried out dozens of operations against people and associations suspected of belonging to the Islamist spectrum or close to it.
There are many areas of conflict
The two NATO members, France and Turkey, have long been cross-cutting on various issues, such as the proceedings in Syria and Libya, the gas dispute in the eastern Mediterranean and the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
