FC Bayern vs. RB Salzburg: individual notes and critiques
On Wednesday, FC Bayern Munich faced RB Salzburg in the Champions League. Against the Austrians, the record-breaking champions won 3-1 despite a mediocre performance and secured a ticket to the knockout stages and group victory. All Bayern stars in individual review:
TOR: Manuel Neuer – score: 1.0
He again showed a really strong performance and stopped several times in a world-class manner. He avoided the deficit early against Berisha (15th), showed a brilliant double save in the final phase (70th). There is no possibility when granting.
DEFENSE: Benjamin Pavard (up to 63rd) – Grade: 4.0
We repeatedly find larger rooms on the right. But he rarely uses these moments for compelling ideas. Basically, he had his side well under control, but occasionally he revealed a bad moment in duels.
Lucas Hernández (ab 63.) – Note: 4.5
It came in the middle of the second half for a sick Pavard. He still had some ideas on the forward movement, but sometimes he left too much room for his defensive opponent. The flank could not be avoided before 1: 3 (73).
Jérôme Boateng – Score: 3.0
He started defensively with some concentration difficulties but then progressed to a factor of stability in a Bayern defense that was not always sovereign. I fill in some holes in the back row. In the final phase, however, mentally too slow several times.
David Alaba – Note: 5.0
It gave me an impression of nervousness. If there were a number of errors in positional play, Salzburg repeatedly invited them to scoring opportunities with serious abandonments. He was able to thank Neuer for not derailing the game.
Chris Richards (up to 79th) – Grade: 4.0
Often hesitates to defend advances on his left side. He almost always depended on the help of the more aggressive companions. But over time I participated in the offensive actions and at least showed some good approaches after the break.
Javi Martínez (from 79.) – no rating
He struggled to calm the game as he was outnumbered in the closing minutes. Control of the game completely disappeared.
MIDDLE FIELD: Marc Roca – Grade: 5.0
He calmly introduced himself in his debut in the starting eleven and carefully secured possession in midfield at times. But the newcomer was rarely able to match Joshua Kimmich’s creativity. He was often too late in their duels in the center, earning a yellow-red card after two stupid fouls (67th).
Leon Goretzka – score: 3.5
He took the fight in midfield squarely and fought many energetic duels for the ball. He won most of his tackles. Apart from the highlights, it also had some weak scenes. He was unable to achieve sustained control in the center.
Serge Gnabry (up to 63rd) – Rating: 4.5
It was on the move a lot, but was rarely able to show itself. He came to several closures from a distance, but too often he finally stopped 30 meters from the door. His very direct and risky passes hardly materialized at first.
Leroy Sané (ab 63.) – Score: 3.5
Initially it brought a lot of fresh air to the offense. Right away, he instinctively made the right ball decisions and made the (preliminary) decision with his goal to make it 3-0 (68). But then it was noticed by a slight loss of the ball, which was also responsible for the goal (73).
Thomas Müller – Note: 3.5
I couldn’t use the rare freedoms in the back area for a long time. Although he had the necessary solidity in many scenes, his ideas almost never worked on the ball. He introduced the lead with his attempted shot shortly before the break (43rd). It only got better when guests offered more rooms in the second round.
Kingsley Coman (bis 79.) – Note: 2.5
He searched for the trails in the depths and placed himself in good positions. He made some half chances, forced it 2-0 with his deflected shot (53rd). I’ve had those moments very rarely for a long time. But it appeared after 2-0 and put the 3-0 in (68th).
Douglas Costa (from 79) – no rating
After being substituted, he couldn’t give any more impulses in the countergame and was completely pale.
ATTACK: Robert Lewandowski – Grade: 2.0
Rank after attachment to the game and thus was often lowered. He only had a few scenes in the penalty area, but he still took advantage of a few scenes and gave Bayern the lead with his first real chance (43) – his 71st goal in the Champions League. In addition, he kicked off Bayern’s third goal.
