For many, the regulations that the federal and state governments decide on at the Corona summit don’t go far enough. RKI President Wieler also expresses concern. To keep the infection process under control, he now believes that it is possible to block the risk areas.
The president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler, has raised the idea of sealing areas with high corona numbers. Nine months ago he said he couldn’t imagine that, he told the “Phoenix” station. “Now I can imagine such measures would be carried out,” Wieler said in the interview.
If measures are not tightened, the number of infections could even rise to 10,000 a day, the RKI chief said. He was still of the opinion that this could be avoided. Regarding housing bans that have since been lifted in some federal states, Wieler said “mobility is one of the drivers of this pandemic.” The regulation that people in areas with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants cannot be accommodated in hotels within seven days had previously been repealed by the courts of Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony.
In the case of the crown measures agreed the day before between the federal and state governments, it was not “binding,” Wieler said. Some of the measures are just “recommendations”, you would like “some of the measures to be carried out on a mandatory basis”, such as wearing masks.
The heads of the federal states and Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed on Wednesday to stricter mask requirements, stricter contact restrictions and a curfew at 11 p.m. in areas with a high number of infections. No agreement was reached on the highly controversial accommodation ban and was postponed.
