reRepublicans in the US Senate want to postpone the start of impeachment negotiations against former President Donald Trump until mid-February. The extra wait time could ensure that all parties have enough time to prepare for trial, Republican Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell said Thursday night. He made this proposal to fellow Democrat Chuck Schumer, he said.
Senate Democrats must approve the calendar. Among other things, he wants to use the process to achieve a lifetime ban on Trump. They hold the Republican responsible for his supporters’ attack on the Capitol in early January.
Joe Biden could be on time
McConnell now proposed that the House of Representatives should not formally charge Trump for “inciting a riot” to the Senate on January 28. Then both parties would have a good two weeks until Feb. 13 to file their respective documents, McConnell said. After that, the actual Senate hearing could begin, which is similar to a court trial.
A slower start to the Senate process could also suit the new president, Democrat Joe Biden. It depends on the approval of the Senate for his cabinet and other important personalities. If the Senate were primarily concerned with impeachment, this could make it difficult for the Biden government to start.
