Schalke coach of the century Huub Stevens can’t work miracles either. “Royal Blue” lost the Bundesliga relegation match to Arminia Bielefeld without a trace.
With Schalke coach of the century Huub Stevens, miraculous healing should go hand in hand on Saturday (19.12.2020). Are you kidding? You’re serious when you say that. With the interim manager signed for two games, the bottom of the table lost the Bundesliga relegation match to Arminia Bielefeld 0: 1 (0: 0) in depressing fashion. For no less than 29 league matches, the “Royal Blues” have now not won. Tasmania Berlin’s negative record for the 1965/66 season is just two games away.
Fabian Klos scored the decisive goal (minute 53) for East Westphalia, who extended their lead over the Gelsenkirchen side to six points. Schalke lost four league games in a row at home for the first time in club history and have not scored in their own stadium for 420 minutes. It was also Bielefeld’s first victory at Gelsenkirchen since the Bundesliga scandal; at Arminia 1-0 on April 17, 1971, however, there were literally kickbacks.
Klos: “They have deservedly won”
Bielefeld’s match winner Klos said after the final whistle on Sportschau’s microphone: “I also think of two teams that are not playing their best football at the moment, the most active and with the best chances to score. That’s why We deserved to win. ” Stevens told the sports program, “I think the team gave it their all.” But he admitted regarding individual players: “They made mistakes again, that’s why they punished us. The moment they win again comes back.”
A single training session is not enough
Schalke’s supposed savior didn’t want to change much after just one training session. Neither did he: Amine Harit and Rabbi Matondo went to the substitute bench, Hamza Mendyl and Alessandro Schöpf started. The “Knurrer von Kerkrade” relied primarily on conversations with insecure players, and apparently was unable to develop them psychologically effectively.
Schalke weak ahead and behind
Offensively harmless and shaky at the rear, his team appeared against Bielefeld, who had recently lost four of five league games. Arminen also had the first mini chance, but Christian Gebauer (19th) shot over the goal. Three minutes later, DSC goalkeeper Stefan Ortega had to intervene for the first time, but Benito Raman’s shot missed.
Córdova just hits the frame
Also in the episode, the door scenes were rare. Fouls, tenacious duels and bad passes determined the basement duel. Bielefeld had more parts of the game, with five corners until halftime, they also got into the opponent’s penalty area more often. Sergio Córdova (44.) had the advantage shortly before the halftime whistle, but was hit by Ozan Kabak only the frame of the right corner kick.
In the second half, Schalke started offensively with more courage and had a good chance. Nassim Boujellab (47.) shot from afar Ortega threw his fist forward, defender Cedric Brunner involuntarily headed the ball into his own goal, Bielefeld’s goalkeeper erased the ball.
Hardly any fight with “Royal Blue”
Klos’ lead to East Westphalia was well deserved, after Nathan de Medina’s long cross, the Schalke defense was afraid of contact with the Bielefeld striker. There was little to see of a pissed-off Schalke. S04 struggled, but that was it. The bottom line was that Bielefeld was closer to a second goal than Stevens’ team to equalize.
And so under Appendix S04, alongside the Great Depression, there is growing hopelessness, and rightly so. In the current constitution, the team and the heavily indebted club seem unable to save themselves and without any chance in the fight for sporting decline and economic survival.
Schalke will now play on Tuesday (22 December 2020) at 6.30 pm at DFB-Pokal in the regional league team Ulm 1846. In the new year the Bundesliga will continue. Schalke will compete at Hertha BSC on Saturday (02.01.2021) at 6.30 pm Bielefeld host Borussia Mönchengladbach three hours earlier.
