Navalny supporters achieved success in regional elections in Russia: two employees moved to the Tomsk City Hall. The Kremlin party “United Russia” remained the strongest party in the 18 regions.

Supporters of Russian opposition Alexei Navalny achieved success in local elections in Siberia. According to preliminary information, two of Nawalny’s employees arrived at the city hall of the Siberian city of Tomsk, according to the Interfax agency.

Kremlin party loses majority in Tomsk

The Kremlin party “United Russia” lost the majority in the city parliament with its 37 seats, but it is still the strongest faction. After counting all the votes, the dominant party in Russia achieved 24.47 percent. That corresponds to eleven seats.

A member of the Tomsk Election Commission, Tatiana Doroshenko, said she did not remember how “United Russia” had done so badly in the 15 years she was in office. The Communists came in second with 17.55 percent of the vote. It was followed by the Pueblo Nuevo (Nowyje Ljudi) party, which was only admitted this year and reached 15.06 percent.

Navalny’s plan works

Before being poisoned, Navalny had promoted his “smart voting” strategy in the city. He called for any candidate to be chosen, but not that of the Kremlin party. The objective of the opposition is to break the monopoly of power in the hands of “United Russia”. The plan worked in the Tomsk case, according to preliminary results.

Navalny is currently in Berlin for medical treatment. She had collapsed and fallen into a coma on an intra-Russian flight. He was later taken to Germany for treatment. According to the federal government, a Bundeswehr laboratory discovered that he had been poisoned with a chemical warfare agent.

Victory for Kremlin-backed candidates

Across the country, all governors sponsored by the Kremlin Party won the vote. In all 18 regions, they had the most votes, Echo Moskwy radio station reported. There will be no runoff.

In most cases, the ruling party’s candidates stood for reelection. The election of new governors was particularly important for the Kremlin because Moscow directly influences politics in individual parts of the country through the heads of the regions.

The EU does not recognize part of the results

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the EU Foreign Affairs representative, Josep Borell, announced that the European Union will not recognize some of the election results. The EU has not recognized the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore does not recognize the elections in the Crimea, he said.

Whoever is elected in the vote organized by Russia in the Crimea is not a representative of Crimea and Sevastopol for the EU. The areas are part of Ukraine, the spokesperson continued.
