The snow in northern Germany is not over yet. But in southern Lower Saxony it is at least less. In In Schleswig-Holstein, however, the snow is likely to spread further for now. According to the Hamburg meteorologist Frank Böttcher, it could continue to snow until at least Wednesday afternoon. Meteorological expert Böttcher predicted Tuesday night in an NDR Info Extra that the Hamburg area would also be in the snow corridor from East Holstein to the south.

According to meteorologist Stefan Kreibohm of the NDR meteorological study in Hiddensee, there was already 35 centimeters of snow there on Tuesday. On Wednesday the snowfall will also cover the Darß and the Mecklenburg coastline and could possibly reach the Schaalsee on the western border, the meteorological expert said. In Wittow and Hiddensee it could be another half meter. Snowdrifts could also occur again. Kreibohm suspects that some places could no longer be reached.

Lower Saxony: it’s very cold now

Heavy snowfall in recent days in much of Lower Saxony is now followed by permafrost. On Wednesday night, temperatures in the Harz Mountains and around Gottingen should drop to -20 degrees, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). Meteorologist Böttcher believes temperatures as low as -27 degrees are possible. Then the previous cold record of -23.7 degrees from 1963 would be broken in Göttingen. According to forecasts, it will also frost at night with up to -4 degrees on the coasts and islands. During the day, the temperatures do not exceed zero degrees. The maximum values are between -1 degrees on the coast and -10 degrees in the Upper Harz. On Wednesday night and during the day, the last snow showers are expected on the coast and in the Elbe estuary, but not much snow falls there. According to the forecast, the sun can be seen more frequently as of Thursday. Temperatures remain in the frost range.

Classroom classes are canceled again

Many schools in Lower Saxony will also be closed on Wednesday. However, instead of lessons, homeschooling takes place. Here you can find the list of affected municipalities (as of Tuesday night).

Traffic jams on the A2 are slowly being cleared

On Tuesday night, the traffic jams slowly dissolved after the snow chaos on the Autobahn 2. According to police, at rush hour traffic jammed for about 25 kilometers in each direction. Slippery roads through icy masses of snow made progress on many stretches of the highway nearly impossible, as several highway police across the country reported Tuesday. Police advised on Tuesday night not to drive on highways such as the A2 and A30 in Lower Saxony.

Autobahn 7 near Göttingen was closed for hours last night. A lot Truckers stopped their vehicles there due to snowfall.

The permafrost period also affects inland navigation

Starting Wednesday night, the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe Side Canal will be closed to inland navigation. This was announced by the office responsible for navigation and maritime transport on Tuesday evening in Braunschweig. As a precautionary measure, the icebreakers that usually move through these channels retreat to the Weser to break the ice floes in front of the landfills. A spokesperson said that the pressure on the ice on these facilities should be reduced. With a view to the announced permafrost period of down to minus 20 degrees, which should last for several days, the icebreakers could probably keep the Mittelland Canal and Elbe Side Canal free anyway, according to the spokesperson. As soon as the ice situation relaxes, the channels must be reopened for shipping.

Snowfall and slipping in Hamburg too

It also snowed in Hamburg on Tuesday night.

Also in Hamburg was snowing. Liquidation vehicles were being used. But it was still slippery in places, especially on bike lanes, trails, and side streets. Due to the strong wind, there are still areas of open water in the Outer Alster. Only during exceptionally long periods of frost does the Outer Alster’s ice sheet become so thick that it can be walked on. This was the last case in February 2012.

Danger to life: do not step on icy surfaces!

Even if it can be tempting: under no circumstances should you step on the ice surfaces, the meteorologist Böttcher and several authorities in northern Germany warned. Despite the low temperatures, the ice is still very thin and not stable. There is a mortal danger.

The “lake effect” brings heavy snowfall

The so-called lake effect is responsible for the snowfall on the coast: gusts bring moisture from the sea, which falls on land in the form of snow. According to meteorological experts, this may also explain why large amounts of snow fall in some parts of the country and not others.

Restrictions on rail traffic persist

More than one train was stopped by heavy snowfall.

There are still train cancellations or delays in rail traffic. the Deutsche Bahn reported “severe restrictions in the Hannover and Bremen area” for regional traffic. There are also restrictions on ferry traffic to the North Frisian Islands. Divided by the Baltic Sea Scandlines reported that the Rostock-Gedser ferry service had been resumed. On the Puttgarden-Rødby route, the ferries operate as planned.
