The Champions League match between Paris St. Germain and Basaksehir has been canceled because the Turkish players left the field in protest. Previously, the fourth official is said to have racially insulted Istanbul’s assistant coach, Pierre Webo.

meIt is a process never seen before in the Champions League. The match between Paris St. Germain and Basaksehir FK Istanbul has been suspended because the Turkish club’s players have left the pitch as one. They expressed their displeasure at an allegedly racist statement made by the fourth official.

For Paris St. Germain, the group with RB Leipzig and Manchester United still on the verge of qualifying for the round of 16, Basaksehir was eliminated before the group final. The game started weak, both teams groped each other. But then the match became more difficult, the referee Ovidiu Hategan from Romania showed Tekdemir from Istanbul (minute eight) and Rafael (tenth) the yellow cards.

Four minutes later there was a commotion on the bench when PSG pro Kimpembe fouled Gulbrandsen Istanbul. Immediately there were loud protests from the Basaksehir Bank. Co-coach Pierre Webo was obviously particularly clear. The Cameroonian was probably upset with the fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu, for the foul.

Later, the fourth official is said to have made racist comments against Webo. The Romanian reportedly told the referee that “the Negru” should see the red card. Negru is the Romanian word for black. It is not clear whether the fourth official said “Negru” or made a racist slur.

In any case, the Turkish players were beside themselves. The Istanbul professional Demba Ba persuaded Coltescu and said, “If you mention a white man, you don’t say ‘The white man over there’ either!” After heated discussions lasting almost ten minutes, Basaksehir’s coach Okan Buruk made the decision: he ordered his team and all the field staff. The outside microphones were heard as the referee team tried to defend themselves saying that the fourth official had only said “Negru”.

The game should continue on Wednesday

PSG and their German coach Thomas Tuchel also entered the catacombs. “Our assistant coach Webo was racially insulted,” Basaksehir tweeted after the incident. A few minutes later, the club posted the UEFA slogan on its Twitter account: “No to racism.”

Even an hour after the scandal, both teams had not returned to the field. It was not clear for a long time if play would resume or if Basaksehir refused to continue playing. For a long time nothing was heard from Uefa. The PSG professionals stayed hot in the cockpit tunnel for a long time, but then disappeared back into the locker room. Then supervisors for both teams cleared the replacement benches, one more indication of a breakdown. More than two hours after the scandal, it was finally clear that the game would not continue. Uefa announced that it will start again on Wednesday at 6:55 pm
