Last Sunday, voters in Rhineland-Palatinate elected their new state government. Now a dubious letter to election officials has surfaced raising questions. The SPD asked for clarification.
“Unsightly discovery on election day,” he says on the Twitter account of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate. “Is that real? Is it a call for voter fraud? Completely wrong!” There is also an image of a letter that poll workers in the state are said to have received after the votes were counted.
If you want to thank the poll workers for their work, you can read on it. And further: “When counting the votes, pay special attention to checking the SPD votes so as not to accidentally get some ballots.” Printed behind him is a winking emoji. The letter is said to have come from CDU circles, signed with the names of CDU member of state parliament, Thomas Weiner, and candidate for state parliament, Sven Koch. It is not yet clear if it is a real document.
CDU Rhineland-Palatinate calls accusations “absurd”
In its tweet, the SPD asked for an immediate explanation. “Does the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate and its MP Thomas Weiner have to immediately explain what that is supposed to be?”
Three hours later the reaction of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate, also on Twitter: “Dear colleagues, the accusations are absurd and unfounded.” The poll workers did a decent job. “We appreciate your commitment in difficult times of the pandemic.”
About 3.1 million people from Rhineland-Palatinate were called to vote. Overall, the turnout was 64.4 percent, slightly lower than in 2016 (70.4 percent). The SPD around Prime Minister Malu Dreyer won the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate with more clarity than expected. The CDU with top candidate Christian Baldauf, meanwhile, received the worst result to date and failed to regain power in Mainz even after 30 years. In the future, there will be six parties in parliament, as Free Voters entered the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament for the first time.
