“The Masked Singer”: Audience Choices Ruin The Show
The fourth season of “The Masked Singer” is already coming to an end, the grand finale will take place this month. Once again, ProSieben presented us with a warm and entertaining show that had a surprise or two when the candidates were revealed. And something else remained unchanged: the voting behavior of the audience. However, this did or did not do the show any good.
Once again it is noted that good singers walk towards the end while others stay on the road, although they do the best they can and sometimes get really creative to entertain the audience. ProSieben always emphasizes that “The Masked Singer” is not a (pure) vocal show, but the audience doesn’t seem to care at all, unfortunately.
“Masked Singer” Viewers Set Questionable Priorities
In the current season, the removal of the chick and quokka is particularly regrettable. Judith Rakers practically became one with her mask, showed humor on stage, and even matched her voice perfectly to the costume. At the same time, he sought a playful dialogue with his supposedly greatest critic: Rea Garvey.
That was quite remarkable when you consider that usually “only” speaks the “Tagesschau”, so it is not his job to entertain people in a silly way. The fact that no one on the advisory team caught up with her confirms her talent for transformation.
Henning Baum also took “his” Quokka quickly into his heart. On stage he took a selfie with Matthias Opdenhövel and somehow brought the DJ work of the cuddly marsupial under one roof with the rock sound of Nirvana.
However, the quokka, like the girl, had to endure a lot of teasing on social media because the person under the respective mask was obviously not a professional singer. For example, a fan comment about “The Masked Singer” on the Facebook page in early March reads:
If you scroll through the timeline, this user is not alone with their opinion. Anyone who enters the show without a recognizable singing experience is at a disadvantage early on, which the results of previous seasons also clearly corroborate: In Germany, Max Mutzke, Tom Beck and, more recently, Sarah Lombardi always won a singer.
Of course, everyone has the right to find the voice of a “Masked Singer” contestant terrible, but these candidates should also have the opportunity to compensate for such weakness with an original performance. After all, they move outside of their comfort zone for the show and therefore have a much more difficult time than the seasoned singers who compete here. The latter, on the other hand, hardly have to do more than what they already dominate while they sleep to succeed in the end.
Professional singers often bore people
Sarah Lombardi, for example, relied solely on her singing in season three, without doing justice to her specific skeletal mask. He could just as easily have been in any other costume and didn’t even try to bring the character to life.
However, she took on the role of favorites from the first show and never took it off. Among the previous winners, only the sloth impressed with his animating qualities, which is why everyone felt able to agree with this character in the end. This made him the great exception.
To put it more precisely, it can be stated: The problem with “The Masked Singer” is not the candidates who cannot sing, but the public who vote with the same tunnel vision.

Just to annoy much of the audience, ProSieben should perhaps think of a season without professional singers in the near future. In any case, I’d rather watch serious public TV presenters outdo themselves on a funny show than identify Thomas Anders as a turtle in episode one and then just yawn.
Anyone who evaluates candidates solely on the basis of their singing implies that they secretly consider “The Masked Singer” to be a casting show. But that is precisely what this program does not want, should and should not be. While more and more big names are daring to perform masked during prime time, the show fails due to narrow-minded viewers. She just didn’t deserve it.
