Markus Söder clear ahead of Merz and Laschet

The Corona crisis is also changing the minds of the people who are the best in the Union to succeed Angela Merkel. In late February, Friedrich Merz was still ahead. That has now decisively changed.
VCSU leader Markus Söder has by far the most popular support for potential candidates for EU chancellor. According to a poll conducted by the YouGov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency, 27 percent of respondents wanted the Bavarian Prime Minister to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in the upcoming federal elections.
Far behind, former Bundestag parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz with 12 and North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet with 8 percent. Health Minister Jens Spahn has 7 percent and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen only 3 percent. 43 percent of respondents did not provide any information.
Before the start of the Crown crisis in Germany in late February, things looked very different. At the time, Merz was still number one with 18 percent approval, ahead of Söder with 12 and Röttgen with 11 percent. Laschet followed with 9 and Spahn with 7 percent.
Spahn does not benefit from crisis management
Unlike Söder, the Minister of Health obviously could not benefit from his crisis management in the Corona crisis. The biggest loser is Röttgen, who has barely appeared since the outbreak of the crisis.
Söder has stated on several occasions that he does not intend to become chancellor. “The question of how things will go next year doesn’t matter at all. We also have a strong chancellor who is very supportive of Bavaria. My place is and will continue to be in Bavaria, “he said in an interview published by the German Press Agency on Thursday.
“I’m not currently evaluating posture and style problems or reading surveys. The only values that interest me are the new infection numbers every day.”
The data used is based on an online survey conducted by YouGov Deutschland GmbH, in which 2045 people participated between April 7 and 9, 2020. The results were weighted and are representative of the German population aged 18 and over.
