New Year Eve
. But while the federal and state governments have agreed to toughen the crown’s measures for December, there should be some exceptions and a short-term relaxation for the two festivals.

Even the fireworks won’t be completely canceled by the end of the year; fireworks bans are only planned for certain locations. In this article you will find out which Wreath rules for Christmas and New Year 2020 in
Germany
should apply.

Christmas and New Years Eve 2020: Corona rules are relaxed

On December 1, 2020, contact restrictions were tightened for the time being: only members of two households can meet, and in any case, no more than five people. However, on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the federal and state governments temporarily allow larger gatherings, at least in most federal states.

Therefore, from December 23, 2020 to January 1, 2021: A maximum of ten people is allowed to meet. It doesn’t matter how many households they come from. Children and young people under 14 years old are not counted, so more than ten people can celebrate together at Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The federal and state governments specifically agreed that the exception rules will apply “at the latest” until January 1; the federal states have the option to finish them before New Year’s Eve.

Thuringia
They have already decided not to implement relaxation for Christmas and New Years Eve. The number of infections is too high for that.

In
Bayern
the easing will only apply until December 26. Here you can find more information about the measures in the Free State: Rules of the New Crown in Bavaria: this applies from Wednesday, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The extension of the Christmas holidays 2020 is part of Corona’s measures

In almost all parts of Germany, the Christmas holidays are supposed to start on December 19. This means that they are advanced and expanded in many federal states. The aim is to reduce the number of contacts between schoolchildren before the holidays to, in turn, reduce the risk of contagion at family Christmas gatherings. There is also more time for possible corona tests.

Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bremen and Thuringia will not join the Christmas season on December 19. The federal states adhere to their own regulations.

Travel: Is it allowed to travel during Christmas and New Year’s Eve?

The federal and state governments ask citizens to “avoid all professional and private travel that is not absolutely necessary, especially tourist trips abroad.” Anyone traveling abroad must generally be quarantined and examined when they return.

In Germany, overnight stays in hotels or holiday homes are currently only allowed for necessary business trips, but not for private trips. At this point, the federal government is against facilitating this at Christmas. However, these federal states have already announced that they will make hotel accommodation possible during the holidays for people who come to visit their families:

  • Sedan
  • Hessen
  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
  • Lower saxony
  • North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Schleswig-Holstein

But the criticism comes from the German Association of Hotels and Restaurants: for most companies it is not economical to open only a few days.

Corona Rules for 2020 New Years Eve Fireworks: Where does the ban on firecrackers apply?

In mid-November, the Netherlands was the first country in Europe to announce that it would completely ban fireworks on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve. This is to relieve rescue workers and clinics at a time when intensive care units are full. In Germany a complete ban on firecrackers was also discussed, but this should not come in this strict form.

The federal and state governments are asking people in Germany to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2020 without firecrackers or rockets, but fireworks are allowed in most places in private settings. Municipalities should only ban it in public places and busy streets. Also, there should be no public fireworks to prevent many people from gathering.

In Bavaria, municipalities are planning more firecracker zones for New Year’s Eve than before. You can read details on the concepts of the largest cities in the Free State here: Survey: These cities are planning additional firecracker zones on New Years Eve.
