Austria practically closes its borders

In the fight against the corona pandemic, Austria is practically paralyzing tourism in the country. All immigrants must be isolated until January. In addition, Chancellor Kurz asks the population to participate in the upcoming mass tests.

Austria imposes a ten-day quarantine obligation for all travelers from Corona’s risk areas from December 7 to January 10. The goal is to greatly curb tourism, the government announced in Vienna. Austria relies on a consistent border regime so returnees or tourists do not bring the virus into the country, Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said.

The threshold is more than 100 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. This applies in practice to all neighboring countries and especially to the Western Balkans, he said. All restaurants and hotels must be closed until January 7. There will be financial compensation, Kurz said.

The lifts of the ski areas can open from December 24 and can therefore be used mainly by locals. At the same time, after the end of the current lockdown on December 6, shops and museums can reopen. The compulsory schools will also reopen. Exit restrictions still exist between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

“The falling numbers are a success, but there is no reason to give the go-ahead,” Kurz said. “If we open everything at the same time, I can give you the guarantee that new infections will increase again and that we will have a new lockdown in January.” So far, an overload of the healthcare system has been avoided, Kurz said. He called on citizens to participate in the upcoming mass tests. In Vienna, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, people can get tested from Friday. This is followed by other federal states. Experts hope that several million people will participate to break the chains of infection.

In Austria, the number of new infections has decreased significantly due to the lockdown. However, the downward trend is less strong than expected. In the morning, 3,972 new infections were recorded in one day. In relation to the number of inhabitants, this value is several times higher than in Germany.
