PragueProtests against the Czech government’s anti-crown measures sparked riots in Prague on Sunday. The police used water cannons and tear gas against the protesters and almost 20 policemen were injured.

Despite the restrictions, thousands of protesters, including many radical football and ice hockey fans, had gathered and, according to Prague Police Chief Tomas Lerch, attacked the police for “no reason”. The organizers ended the meeting in the city center after about an hour. Then there were clashes between violent hooligans and the security forces. Smoke bombs and fireworks were detonated. According to the police, batons and firearms were seized during identity checks. Around 50 people were arrested.

The protesters called for the resignation of Health Minister Roman Prymula. Prymula accused the protesters of having caused “hundreds of new infections” with their behavior.

The number of new coronavirus infections in the Czech Republic has increased rapidly recently. On Friday, with 11,105 new cases, a record was reached in 24 hours. In the EU member state with its 10.7 million inhabitants, more than 170,000 coronavirus infections and more than 1,400 deaths have so far been recorded.
