SedanAround 1000 police officers are supposed to check on Saturday and Sunday how the stricter standards of the new Infection Protection Ordinance are being met across the city.

In Berlin, new restrictions will apply from Saturday due to the corona pandemic. Oral and nasal protection must now also be used in markets and on ten busy streets, in shopping malls and in queues.

Tighter upper limits for private meetings will also come into effect. Outside, only 25 people instead of the previous 50 can gather for a celebration, inside instead of the previous ten people, only members of one household plus a maximum of five other people.

Half of the emergency services are police from the capital, the other half are federal police. Berlin Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) and Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) agreed to a joint effort.

First understanding, then announcements

A police spokesman said that they would first try to instill understanding among citizens. Anyone who ignores prompts to wear a mask or keep their distance, for example, should expect consequences. The reports for administrative violations would then be drawn up and sent to the district offices.

According to Senator Geisel, increased controls should show that the days of neglect are over. According to Federal Minister Seehofer, the situation is very serious given the number of new infections.
