Charges have been brought against former soccer player Christoph Metzelder. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf district court of the German press agency. As the newspaper “Bild” reports, the 39-year-old man is accused of obtaining and possessing child pornographic material. Neither the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor’s Office nor Metzelder could be reached for comment. For Metzelder, the presumption of innocence applies up to a possible conviction.
Investigators from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office picked up Metzelder in September 2019 from the Hennef sports school to carry out search warrants. The former Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Schalke 04 pro took part in a training course there.
The possession and distribution of child pornography has so far been criminalized. However, the Federal Ministry of Justice continues to tighten penalties for sexual violence against children. According to this, child sexual abuse should be classified as a crime in the future.
