Pork knuckle under suspicion of crown: China sees German meat as reason for new infection

From the export-oriented German pig industry, China also produces parts that are difficult to sell in this country and that are considered delicacies there: legs, ears, tails and bones. A knuckle of pork imported from Germany has now identified the country as the trigger for a new Corona case.

As reported by the state “Global Times”, a worker in a cold room in the city of Tianjin, in eastern China, was infected. The tests then showed that traces of the virus had been discovered in the packaging of a frozen pork knuckle, which was initially imported from Bremen to Tianjin and from there shipped to Dezhou city.

Strict controls against the spread of viruses

According to the Global Times, eight people with whom the worker had previously had close contacts were quarantined as a precaution. Tianjin has also entered “war mode,” which generally means that there are strict controls in place.

According to the government, there have been hardly any new infections in China for months, so life and economic activity are returning to normal. Although much of the country is considered “crown free”, there are always smaller local outbreaks that are fought with strict measures such as blockades and mass testing.

China has already blamed frozen food or its packaging imported from abroad for the infections on several occasions. In Germany, on the other hand, there have been numerous more important outbreaks in slaughterhouses.

German pig farmers and slaughterhouses have also been struggling for weeks with import bans due to African swine fever, which was first detected in Germany in September. It is not known whether the pork knuckle that arrived in Tianjin on October 19, according to the “Global Times”, fell under such a ban, also imposed by China.
