The corona warning app was supposed to help contain the pandemic. But that doesn’t work because many Germans completely reject the app. Others use them, but they themselves do not register positive results.

KAccording to a survey, just under half of Germans reject the use of the Corona warning app. The survey conducted by the opinion research institute Infratest dimap on behalf of the German Consumer Affairs Advisory Council is available for WELT AM SONNTAG. Even more than half refuse to use the warning app.

More than 1000 Germans over the age of 18 were interviewed online. A total of 44 percent of the study participants stated that they had not downloaded the application and did not plan to download it. Four percent had removed the app again. Five percent said the app didn’t work for them.

In fact, rejection is likely to be much more widespread. “The survey was conducted digitally and therefore primarily reached people who are fundamentally more positive about app usage than the population average,” says Gert Wagner. The economics professor is a member of the Council of Experts on Consumer Affairs, which advises the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection.

40 percent do not enter a positive test result

Around 22 million Germans have currently downloaded the Corona app. Additionally, not all users who receive a positive corona test also report it digitally.

In the week of November 2-8, an average of just 2,200 people said they were infected on the app. However, the authorities registered an average of 18,000 new illnesses in the same period. A total of 40 percent of the app’s users have not shared their test results despite the infection.

The government has increased the advertising budget for the program developed by Telekom subsidiary T-Systems and the SAP software group. Initially it was the issue of 3.5 million euros, now it amounts to almost 13 million euros, as shown by a request from Joana Cotar, a member of the AfD parliamentary group, to the federal government.
