The death of Black Daniel Prude in March had not attracted much public attention. Now, however, body camera recordings of police officers have been released, showing heartbreaking details of the arrest.
The black Daniel Prude had already died in March, now the body cameras show details of the man’s arrest in the New York city of Rochester. When he was arrested, police officers Daniel Prude put what is known as a saliva protective hood over his head and pressed his face to the ground for two minutes. This is shown in the video recordings that the victim’s family has collected for months and is now publishing.
Prude died on March 30, seven days after the confrontation with the police, when the life support measures ended. Another reason why his family was only now public was that there were no recordings of the events of the video material of the policemen involved.
Naked and confused in the middle of the street
New body camera footage now shows an obviously confused Prude, naked, in the middle of the street. Follow the police instructions when they ask you to lie on the ground and put your hands behind your back. Prude looks excited and yells at the cops as she twists and handcuffs on the asphalt.
The officers then put the protective hood over Prude’s head. Hoods are very controversial. They are supposed to protect police officers from attacks by those arrested. Time and again, however, they appear as a factor in the death of the prisoners. But at the time of the incident, the first corona cases were in New York.
“It feels quite cold”
When Prude demands that her hood be removed, the cops hit her skull in the street. One of the officers keeps his head on the ground with both hands and says, “Stop spitting,” as Prude’s screams turn into groans and grunts.
The police seem concerned when the water comes out of Prude’s mouth. “Are you vomiting?” Asks one. Then Prude stops moving and stands still. One of the officers observes that Prude has been outside naked for some time. “It feels pretty cold,” says one.
A coroner concluded that Prude’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of suffocation due to physical limitations.” The report cited delirium and acute poisoning from the drug phencyclidine, also known as PCBs, as contributing factors.
Prude was from Chicago and visited her family in Rochester. Police arrived after Joe Prude called 911 and reported that his brother had left the house and was suffering from mental health problems.
More cases of police violence
The case thus adds to the endless series of incidents of fatal police violence against black people in the United States. Yesterday, a black cyclist was killed during a police stop in Los Angeles. Today, an 18-year-old black man was shot and killed at a police checkpoint in Washington.
