Shortly after midnight, a police patrol noticed the car. But the driver fled the control on federal highway 40 and later on the A66 in the direction of Rüdesheim.

Just before Erbenheim, he entered a motorway service station area too quickly, lost control of his car, and crashed into a gas pump. The vehicle caught fire.

A gas station employee pressed the “emergency stop button” and prevented gasoline from escaping. Police rescued the trapped and seriously injured driver from the burning car. He smelled strongly of alcohol and blood was drawn. Then he arrived at a hospital in Wiesbaden. According to the police, there is no danger of death.

Four policemen and the gas station employee suffered mild smoke inhalation and had to be treated on the spot. The A66 was closed for two hours during rescue efforts.
