After the child murders in Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia, the police announced more details. Consequently, the researchers assume that the mother is emotionally overwhelmed. An arrest warrant was issued against her.

The five Solingen children found dead are believed to have suffocated, according to investigators. There are also indications that they had been sedated, prosecutor Heribert Kaune-Gebhardt told a news conference in Solingen on Friday, without giving details. That was the result of the autopsy of the bodies. The 27-year-old mother had received an arrest warrant for five murders. She is the only suspect.

According to the investigation, the mother sent WhatsApp messages to her grandmother on the train trip to Düsseldorf. She said she was doing very badly, that she couldn’t anymore. The background is the separation from her husband. She wrote that she wanted to kill the children and herself. The grandmother replied that she was calling the police. Then the 27-year-old wrote: “Send the police to the apartment. The children are dead.”

In Düsseldorf, the suspect threw herself in front of a train. She suffered serious but not fatal internal injuries, said the head of the homicide squad, Marcel Maierhofer. The woman is not yet ready for questioning. The three parents of the children are not suspects.

The eleven-year-old son was the only one who survived the crime

An eleven-year-old boy, who was the only one of the six siblings who survived, may have only been saved because he was in school at the time of the crime, the homicide squad chief said. The presumption has yet to be confirmed. The 11-year-old has not yet been able to be questioned.

The boy had traveled to Düsseldorf with his mother and from there he took a train to Mönchengladbach to see his grandmother. In a school group chat shortly after the crime, the 11-year-old wrote that all of his siblings were dead, Chief of Operations Robert Gereci said. The police gave the names of the children with Melina, Leonie, Sophie (one, two and three years) and Timo and Luca (six and eight years).

Husband’s separation could have overwhelmed the suspects

The Police and the Public Ministry assumed that the woman “committed the act in a state of emotional overload and that the motive must also be found.” Maierhofer said she had previously been separated from her last husband, the father of four of her children, for a year. According to the current status of the investigation, the suspect had no prior psychological illnesses.

The five children, ages one to eight, were lying dead on their cots when emergency services stormed an apartment building on Thursday. They were killed between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, Maierhofer said. It is possible, but not proven, that they were poisoned during breakfast the morning of September 3.

Authorities: There is no evidence of danger to children.

The family was already known to the city’s youth welfare office before the crime. “The family received the necessary support from the city of Solingen. The youth welfare office has also made possible offers of assistance,” the city said, without giving any details.

However, there was no evidence of a risk to child well-being. “We have no evidence of any abnormality in the family,” said Heribert Kaune-Gebhardt of the Wuppertal prosecutor’s office. In July and August of this year, two rescue missions were carried out on the family, but they were not criminal in nature.
