31 years after the murder of a young mother in the Sauerland region, the alleged perpetrator was discovered in Greece. Greek authorities had reported this through the Schengen information system, Attorney General Gerhard Pauli said in Hagen.

The 68-year-old Greek was registered with a European arrest warrant. When he had to be hospitalized in late April, his identity came to light. How he could hide from investigators for so long is unclear.

According to the “Lüdenscheider Nachrichten”, who had previously reported the case, the suspect had suffered an epileptic seizure in Agrinio, Greece, and had been hospitalized. There it was evident that the man was a wanted assassin.

In April 1989, the metal worker in Plettenberg, Sauerland, fired multiple shots at the 25-year-old when she was about to leave in her car. The young Greek hit several bullets to the head and shoulder.

Reason for murder “love rejected”

Back then, the young woman, accompanied by a friend, met with the man to talk. The suspect is said to have expected the mother of two to leave her husband for him.

Investigators say the 25-year-old man gave him a transfer at the meeting. After the rejection, the then-37-year-old is said to have suddenly pulled out the gun and shot the woman.

According to the fingerprints, the author had fired at least six shots through the side window at the woman. At the time, investigators named “rejected love” as the motive for the murder. The victim’s girlfriend was next to the car when the shots were fired, Attorney General Pauli said. The alleged perpetrator allegedly had gone abroad immediately after the crime.

An extradition request has already been made. However, Greece generally hands over its own compatriots to Germany: while murder in Germany is not subject to statutes, the act in Greece would have been subject to statutes after 25 years. According to the researchers, it will now be shown whether this prevents labor.
