Planned election maneuver ?: Trump bans oil drilling off the US coast

Florida is one of the key states for the re-election of President Trump. Now it is extending the ban on oil drilling off the coast. His Democratic challenger Biden is surprised. Because recently Trump demanded otherwise.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has extended a moratorium on oil drilling off the coast of the state of Florida for ten years until 2032. Trump signed an ordinance to that effect in Jupiter, Florida. According to him, the ban on oil extraction has been extended to the coastal waters of the other southeastern states of Georgia and South Carolina.

The move stands in stark contrast to Trump’s other energy policies. The president is a strong supporter of the oil and gas industry and is promoting the expansion of production areas. His government had only approved a highly controversial oil drilling in a nature reserve in Alaska in mid-August. Additionally, the Trump administration relaxed, suspended or completely repealed numerous environmental protection regulations.

Trump’s presidential rival Joe Biden of the Democratic opposition also suspected that Trump’s current decision to extend the ban on oil drilling off the southeast coast had to do with the November 3 election. A few months ago, the president had planned to end the moratorium, but has now “conveniently” changed his mind, Biden wrote on Twitter. He called the president’s actions “incredible.” Biden also stated that he himself also rejects offshore drilling.

The decision also came as a surprise to the oil and gas industry. The government never mentioned an extension of the moratorium to the department responsible for the drilling plans. “That was a total theft,” a source told Politico magazine. “Nobody knows where this is coming from. It looks like some kind of campaign.”

Florida is one of the key states for the outcome of the presidential elections, in which Trump is fighting for a second term. According to polls, a head-to-head race between Trump and Biden is looming in Florida. Florida Governor Rick Scott welcomed the extension of the oil drilling moratorium. Scott, who, like Trump, is a Republican, tweeted that he had many conversations with the president about the importance of keeping the Florida coast “intact.”
