Plane bomb found in Heckert area: what are residents waiting for now?
Chemnitz – On Wednesday afternoon, a WWII aerial bomb was found during construction works in the Heckert area of Chemnitz (TAG24 informed). There will be a mega evacuation in the residential area on Thursday.
The five-hundred-peso bomb was discovered around 2:50 p.m. during construction work in Wilhelm-Firl-Strasse. After the discovery, construction work was stopped and the adjacent area was cordoned off.
In coordination with the explosive ordnance disposal service, the city has established an evacuation radius of 1000 meters to defuse the US bomb.
Exactly which streets will be affected will be determined on Thursday. A provisional restricted area includes parts of Stollberger Straße, Wladimir-Sagorski-Straße, parts of Südring to Helbersdorfer Straße and parts of Wolgograder Allee.
There are numerous prefabricated buildings in the area. Around 15,000 residents are affected by the evacuation. The evacuation should begin Thursday afternoon.
“The city of Chemnitz is currently working on an evacuation plan, particularly for the elderly and nursing homes,” the city announced Wednesday night. Schools and kindergartens remain open regularly on Thursdays.
Update, 9:08 am.: Dramatic situation for residents
For the affected residents, the situation is particularly dramatic due to Corona: Martina Kisspal (67) reports that she is afraid of Corona, she lacks current information because she does not have internet.
Update, 8.51am.: What do you have to take with you during an evacuation?
The city of Chemnitz has issued a list of what residents should take with them for evacuation: don’t forget medicines, glasses, hearing aids, hygiene items and of course mouth and nose protection. Of course, personal documents like identity cards and health insurance cards are also very important, but so are money and EC cards. You should carry food and drinks, enough for several hours, as well as a mobile phone with a charging cable or power bank. Also on the list are children’s books, magazines and toys.
Update, 8.45am.: There is still calm on the site
At the moment calm still reigns in the place where the bomb was found. The work was guarded by the police all night. Passersby, passing by the construction site, sometimes look curiously into the ditch and take photos.
In the summer there was also a suspicious find at a construction site in Sonnenberg. Had a suspected bomb been proven, around 22,000 residents would have had to leave their homes. The alleged pump eventually turned out to be a water pipe (TAG24 informed).
