Phil Taylor now follows the World Darts Championship (2021 World Darts Championship LIVE on TV on SPORT1, on LIVESTREAM and LIVETICKER) from a distance, but still with great interest.
The record world champion, who ended his career after losing the World Cup final to Rob Cross in 2018, is the sport’s greatest and most successful player.
Darts World Cup from December 15 to January 3 LIVE on TV on SPORT1, on LIVESTREAM and LIVETICKER
I am SPORT1-Interview that the 60-year-old man talks about his current situation and the 2021 World Cup. “El Poder” finds praise for Gabriel Clemens and Max Hopp.
SPORT1: Mr. Taylor, you finished your degree three years ago. Are you enjoying the new chapter of your life?
Phil Taylor: In fact, I thought I would miss darts more. But I’m doing very well, especially considering the Covid situation. That would have been a nightmare for me. But I don’t miss all the trips. In the last three years I have hardly ever traveled. I enjoy being at home.
SPORT1: What do you miss most about darts?
Taylor: The prize money is at the top of the list. I also miss the competition with the really greats like Raymond van Barneveld or Michael van Gerwen.
SPORT1: It was an unusual year. How did you live it?
Taylor: It was very strange, we had nowhere else to go to buy. We haven’t seen our family for half a year. I felt like I was watching a movie on television. We have gotten used to it here, but many people still cannot work and live with the support of the government.
Taylor: World Cup as a game in the living room
SPORT1: Many of the best players have already failed in the 2021 Darts World Cup, such as Rob Cross, Peter Wright or Michael Smith. Is the World Cup result more unpredictable than ever?
Taylor: Hundred percent. For the inexperienced, it is easier without a spectator because they can be very distracting. These players are not as nervous as they used to be, and it is also easier for experienced players. It is like playing in the living room.
SPORT1: Is it just the audience? Some of the best players also have problems with their consistency.
Taylor: Yes, that is true. And I admit that I enjoy watching it because they are no longer wins from start to finish. Many of these 4-0 victories were not so clear cut. This PDC World Championship is interesting. Players are more nervous because they barely played tournaments. And of course there is always a positive corona test after all the prep.

Taylor praises Hopp
SPORT1: There is a new generation of darts players with Nathan Aspinall, Dimitri van den Bergh or the Germans around Max Hopp. What is the difference between the current generation and theirs?
Taylor: I think today’s players are more determined. There is more money involved and they know that beautiful things take a lot of work. When I started there were also good games, but not so many. The competition is much stronger today. If you catch young Dimitri on a good day, you’re swimming. He is a fantastic player, just like Max Hopp. There are two Max Hopps: the good one and the brilliant one. I’m a huge fan of hers and I think it will click soon. His style is wonderful and he is gaining experience. Upgrade to.
SPORT1: On what does it depend on him which face he shows?
Taylor: I think it depends on how the day feels. He knows how to prepare. And soon a World Championship will begin and he will have a good run. Like Joe Cullen yesterday, he will become one of the best darts players.
Taylor Clemens warns that
SPORT1: Another German, Gabriel Clemens, caused a sensation at the World Cup and beat Peter Wright. How do you see it, where can it improve?
Taylor: Gabriel can only improve if he understands why he lost. And that’s what you have to work on on the board. I won the World Cup early Sunday and trained again on Monday. It’s about experimenting and knowing what is good for you. Sometimes you exercise too much and get tired. It happened to me. So I only trained an hour before the games.
SPORT1: Gabriel Clemens is not a born artist and he is quite taciturn. How important are these properties?
Taylor: I like it, I’m not the big mouth type. He is calm and focused. He will come back and say to himself: “If I can beat a world champion, I can also be a world champion.” Now he has to keep training and not prepare.
SPORT1: How do you assess the situation of the Germans in general?
Taylor: There are currently very good German dart players. They are not where they belong. You should be better. You have to change something to improve. It’s like Formula 1: you have to improve the car even after a victory.
Taylor: Cullen impressed me
SPORT1: There have been times in your life when you felt overtrained. To what extent can you determine where this point is?
Taylor: You can get tired and nervous. Many players ask me for advice. I tell them to try to take a nap every day. If they get used to it, it will help them in the World Cup. There are long days at the hotel and this half hour again provides refreshments.
SPORT1: Which players did you impress at the 2021 World Cup?
Taylor: There were some. Joe Cullen really impressed me. Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney are in good shape. I am a huge fan of Vincent van der Voort. Michael just did it. But I also like Nathan Aspinall and Dirk van Duijvenboden.
SPORT1: Which players do you keep in regular contact with?
Taylor: I talk to Devon Petersen a lot, he often asks me for advice. I am very proud of Vincent van de Voort and I have congratulated him.
Taylor: I won’t be back
SPORT1: It was your first year without a big game on stage. Did that make you think of a comeback?
Taylor: No, I am enjoying my life and I will not return. But thanks for asking.

SPORT1: Raymond van Barneveld, on the other hand, is making a comeback. Michael van Gerwen has criticized him for it. What do you think
Taylor: That’s Raymond’s decision, but I think he will have a hard time. First you have to get the Tour Card and then you start from 0. You have to contribute at least 200,000 pounds to enter the top 32. It will be very difficult. You will have to be patient, even if it is not easy. But time runs against him.

SPORT1: What will you have to do?
Taylor: He has to win the Q-School and then go through the Players Championship. You will not be in any tournament, unless you get a wild card. Then you have to collect money. It will be difficult.
Taylor: I’ll be back to training in January
SPORT1: Do you think you can return successfully?
Taylor: Yes of course. He lost talent and weight. Maybe the break was good for him. We may see a new Raymond, which will be interesting to see. The qualifiers will be difficult for him.
SPORT1: You played Raymond van Barneveld on Charity. What can we expect from you next year?
Taylor: They invited me to the world soft point darts championship. We play digitally and there will be players from all over the world. The cash prize is 100,000 euros. That’s not bad and I’m looking forward to it. I will be training again from January. I even put one in the living room and will go back to tape as well.
SPORT1: What are your wishes for 2021?
Taylor: It would be great to win the Soft Tip World Championship. And I would like to have the fans again. It’s not the same without you.
