A demonstration for refugees and against racism started at noon on the Rathausmarkt. Several groups called for this, including the “Seebrücke Hamburg” initiative, the refugee council and the “Lampedusa in Hamburg” group.

Initiators call for more refugees to be accepted
The police expect around 4,000 participants. Officially, it’s about rebuilding a tent. Lampedusa refugees had used it as a permanent vigil since 2013 and it was forcibly dismantled by the Hamburg-Mitte district in late March and was not far from the main train station. After the Moria refugee camp fire, the way refugees were treated on the Greek islands also played an important role in the demonstration. The initiators of the demonstration demand that Germany take in more refugees than expected.
